The 3CA is also pioneering in providing one of the first vertical Farms in Toronto and a community garden to foster entrepreneurship combined with food production and community engagement.
A10‐story Vertical Farm towers over the 3CA Ctr. At the north end of the building (Fig.5). The urban farming concept is a growing interest in many cities around the world. What is unique at 3CA Ctr. is that it is designed in the form of a Vertical Farm in a Community Centre. The Vertical Farm combined with an outdoor Community Garden serve to achieve several goals including producing own food, creating a business and entrepreneurship opportunity, and most importantly reinforcing the notion of creating A Place for People, by offering yet another option for place‐making and for engagement of people of all ages in the community.
The Vertical Farm is a venture that can be a catalyst for change. A place for seniors to work part‐time and occupy themselves with a rewarding experience and preoccupation. For children and adults, the Vertical Farm offers hands-on opportunities for learning about plants, organic produce, urban agriculture, and a building that is uniquely designed for this purpose. In addition to learning, the Vertical Farm will create jobs too, for all age groups, particularly for the seniors. The jobs will come with training programs to encourage residents and newcomers in acquiring new skill training and experience in a fast‐growing industry. Community members may take pride in growing their own food in a healthy and safe environment.
